I don't know its true or not, but I believe that compared to those in the states, children in Japan are more depending on their parents.
When I went to the U.S., I was surprised to know the fact that most of students start living by themselves just after entering universities or colleges. In Japan, most of people won't start living by themselves until they graduate universities.(Unless their home is really far from their universities)Furthermore, some of them still live with their parents even though they graduate universities.(We call those people as"PARASAITO" in Japanese which stands for parasites...because they are parasitic to their parents.)
Some of those "PARASAITO" children are working and earn money to travel, party,,etc by themselves, others are not even working and just staying home (We call them as "hikikomori"). The number of "hikikomori" children are increasing and now, its one of serious social problems in Japan.
I don't think American parents let their children live without doing anything..(A.K.A. hikikomori-life) so I think parents in the states make their children more independent than those in Japan.
